The Nuestro Pequeños Hermanos orphanage in San Pedro de Macoris is home to 175 orphans. The orphanage was founded in 2003 in San Pedro de Macoris and then moved outside of the city to a spacious compound where they built boarding houses, a school, medical center, library, offices, and recreational spaces. With a generous donation from the Boston Red Sox and the MLB-DDA, the Deficiencies in Reading and Writing with Students of the Center for Education: Nuestro Pequeños Hermanos project works to improve the reading and writing of the students in elementary grades three, four, and five. The project was formalized in the end of October and began implementation in November. The principal objective of the project is to create a desire to learn, read and write among the students, to increase their reading comprehension and writing ability and to increase their language capacity through reading and writing exercises. The program strives to incorporate creative learning tools and techniques to help enable the success of the program. The Deficiencies in Reading and Writing with Students of the Center for Education: Nuestro Pequeños Hermanos project did not conduct technical monitoring or evaluative reporting during the first quarter FY2010 reporting period, however through site visits, the MLB-DDA grants manager could observe that the project was underway, the teachers implementing the project are trained and the students have begun to participate in the new programming.
